Keep in mind that teenagers get most of their cues from their peers and are still subject, to some degree, parental wishes. That teenagers still pursue tanning despite all of the risks of developing skin cancer cannot be blamed solely on industry and its marketing efforts. Some of the responsibility lies with the parents who do not intervene with sufficient authority ("just say no" anyone?) and the willingness of teeangers to listen to their friends that say its safe.

There is also the interesting data showing the addictive nature of tanning.

Melanoma has been notoriously difficult to treat once it has reached advanced stages. Lots of hope thrown at potential treatments that, over time, proved to offer little over placebo. That there is noew a treatment that offers any significant advances in terms of survival is a tremendously helpful step forward. By "significant", that means even a month or two. It would not be appropriate to even begin to think of this as a step towards a cure. It is, however, meaningful and should help lead to the development of even more effective ageints.

I agree that tanning among teenagers has become an obsession. Media and advertising have captivated individuals who cannot vote, drive, or live on their own, let alone make decisions that could threaten their future health. It is interesting to consider the drastic change in what is considered beautiful: the historical vogue of fair-skinned women that possessed a feminine shape compared to the bronzed waifs. that are now depicted. If legislation is passed banning the use to tanning beds for those under 18 (most likely age constraint?), would parental permission be accepted because of the growing number of parents who accept their children's use of tanning beds or may even join their children in this unhealthy activity.

David, I've read that checking your skin regularly will familiarize you with your skin when it's normal, so if you see anything unusual, you will notice it and can go to a dermatologist.

When examining your skin, you're looking for changes in size, color, shape, or texture of any marks that you see on your skin. Examples are moles that itch or bleed, a sore that never fully heals, or a brown or black streak underneath a nail. The "Prevention and Detection" page of this Website has some great information about recognizing and identifying skin cancer.

It's great to see that Portland (Oregonians) are more Suntelligent than most (#9). As a native Oregonian I spent many years worshiping the sun believing that since I had so little exposure (it rains 8 months of the year in Portland) that I could tolerate a little more sun exposure when I actually did get in the sun in the summer time or on vacation. Now I am an educated Sun Screen user, and it's good to know that the majority of Portland residents are making smart decisions about sun exposure by applying sunscreen as well.
